Ray tracing offers photorealistic quality superior to traditional scanline rendering and has therefore gained a lot of attention recently by the gaming industry’s ever growing demand for higher quality.
Ray tracing has very high computationally costs and that has so far left ray tracing impractical for use in games and interactive applications.
The ray tracing method is a classic embarrassing parallel problem, and has been implemented on many types of parallel hardware and even in high level shader languages on the modern programmable graphical processing units.
